## What this service covers
Two closely related jobs sit here: installing or replacing hot water cylinders, including modern unvented cylinders that run at mains pressure, and replacing or upgrading the incoming water main that feeds the whole property.

An unvented cylinder removes the tank in the loft and delivers hot water at mains pressure to every outlet, which usually transforms showers upstairs. It has to be sized against the number of bathrooms and how the household uses hot water, not against whatever was there before.

A water main upgrade tackles the other half of the problem. Old, narrow or partially blocked supply pipes throttle the whole house, and no cylinder or shower can deliver more than the main brings in.

Why it matters

## What weak pressure is really costing you

Hot water that runs cold when someone else turns a tap on, a bath that takes an age to fill, and showers that drop to a trickle are all signs that the supply, storage or both are undersized for the household.

Old cylinders lose heat constantly through poor insulation, so you pay to reheat water you never used. Scaled cylinders lose capacity as well as efficiency.

Leaving an ageing supply pipe in the ground also carries its own risk: when it finally fails it fails underground, and the repair is disruptive and unplanned.

## Cylinders and water mains in more detail
How to tell which half of the problem you have.

### Is it the cylinder or the main?
If cold water pressure is good but hot water is weak or runs out, the cylinder and its configuration are the likely cause.

If both hot and cold are weak, particularly upstairs and when more than one outlet is open, the incoming main is the bottleneck and a new cylinder alone will not fix it. We measure both at the survey so the money goes on the right job.

### Sizing an unvented cylinder
Capacity is decided by the number of bathrooms and the pattern of use: a family who all shower between seven and eight in the morning needs more stored hot water than one that spreads it through the day.

Undersized cylinders are the most common complaint we are called to after somebody else's installation, so we size against demand rather than cupboard space alone.

### Replacing a water main
Older properties often still run on narrow or degraded supply pipe. Replacing it with modern pipework restores the flow the rest of the plumbing was designed around.

It pairs naturally with a bathroom installation or a new shower, where the improvement is felt immediately.

Will an unvented cylinder improve my shower?If your hot water is currently gravity-fed from a loft tank, almost certainly. We confirm it by measuring the incoming main at the free survey.

How do I know if my water main needs replacing?Weak hot and cold flow together, especially upstairs or with two outlets running, usually points at the main rather than the fittings.
